Higher Diploma in Total Quality Management & Business Excellence

The Higher Diploma in Total Quality Management and Business Excellence is the capstone programme in PABM Campus's Quality Management pathway, designed for learners seeking strategic and leadership-level competency in organisation-wide quality management. The programme moves beyond departmental quality control to examine Total Quality Management (TQM) as an organisational philosophy — encompassing leadership commitment, strategic quality planning, customer-driven excellence, and continuous organisational transformation.

Learners engage in depth with internationally recognised business excellence frameworks, including the principles underpinning the EFQM Excellence Model and the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria, examining how these frameworks apply within Sri Lankan and regional organisational contexts. The programme develops advanced capability in strategic quality planning, benchmarking, Six Sigma fundamentals, and organisational change management, preparing learners to lead quality initiatives rather than simply implement them.

A significant component addresses the human dimension of quality excellence — organisational culture, employee empowerment, leadership behaviour, and change management. Learners undertake an applied capstone project, analysing and proposing quality improvement strategies for a real or realistic organisational case, culminating in a professional presentation. On successful completion, graduates are equipped for roles such as Quality Manager, Business Excellence Manager, Continuous Improvement Manager, or Head of Quality Assurance.

Entry Direct

Applicants who satisfy any ONE of the following are eligible for direct entry, without requiring the Certificate:

•       G.C.E. Advanced Level (any stream) with a minimum of two passes.

•       G.C.E. Ordinary Level with six passes including Mathematics and English, together with relevant work experience.

•       No formal educational qualification, provided the applicant has a minimum of two years of relevant work or business experience, subject to review by the PABM Advisory Committee.

•       Entrepreneurs, business owners, or self-employed individuals with practical experience in a quality-related, operational, or supervisory capacity.

•       A recognised Certificate in Quality Management, Business Management, Engineering, or a related discipline from another institution.

•       Any other qualification deemed equivalent by the PABM Campus Academic/Advisory Committee.

Entry Completion

Students who have successfully completed the Certificate in Quality Management Fundamentals at PABM Campus, with the required minimum pass grade, are eligible for direct progression into the Diploma in Quality Management without further entrance assessment.

Entry RPL

Applicants who have previously commenced a diploma-level or equivalent programme in Quality Management, TQM, Business Management, or a closely related discipline at another recognised institution, but did not complete it, may apply through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). On submission of academic transcripts, course syllabi, and supporting documentation, the PABM Advisory Committee will conduct a proper evaluation of the applicant's existing level of study and determine the appropriate point of entry into the Diploma programme, and the specific course units required to be completed in order to satisfy the full Diploma requirements.
